Dear Fellow Member

I hope you and yours are safe in these troubling times. Day by day we learn more about what is happening around us- it is a constantly changing environment although cabin fever is rife. Some club members will be suffering financially as a consequence of Covid19 and others will feel their health is at risk. Please look after yourselves. I am writing to give you an update on what we, as a board, together with our staff, have been doing to keep the club safe.

Like many businesses we suddenly found ourselves with seriously reduced income. So, we have been contacting all our suppliers and asking for payment holidays. We have had a very positive response from many including our landlords, Cowanes Trust, our energy suppliers, BOC, the bank and many others. The brewers Greene King Belhaven have been fantastic and are worthy of special mention. Not only did they agree to a payment holiday until we start up again, they have collected all time limited stocks (basically all the kegs of beer in our cellar) and have offered to resupply what they take away in the future at no cost to us. Brilliant! Scottish Rugby have been really supportive as well and are fast tracking all the remaining payments due to us this month. We will be applying to their hardship fund too. We have also applied for all grants and support that the Government is providing, even though we do not fall into the category for business support due to our rateable value, Stirling Council is looking to see if they can assist the club

In addition, we are furloughing all staff except Emma and Scott McFarlane (our groundsman) until the end of May. We will keep this under review but we expect the ‘furlough’ to be continued for another 3 months. For some this will be painful but we are trying to be as fair as our means allow. For others, such as our bar staff, this may come as a pleasant surprise but loyalty is a two-way thing. We are trying to protect all SCRFC employees’ jobs by fully utilising the Government furlough provisions and grants, these however are still a couple of weeks away from being finalised.

We are really pleased that everyone who had booked the club to hold an event over this summer has stuck with us and are moving their bookings to a later date.

We have been monitoring our cash flow carefully and we can see our way through the next three months, (and hopefully beyond but you would have to be a very brave person to predict the future just now.)

The season was shaping up to be another great success and that’s down to you, our loyal members and the many volunteers that work tirelessly for the club. Despite the blunt end, I think we should all be proud of what was achieved in 2019/20 at Bridgehaugh.

This letter is to ask all club members to stick with us. We are asking as many of you as possible to set up a standing order to pay your membership monthly starting this April. Membership forms will be coming out to you soon. If we can get as many members as possible paying a monthly standing order that will allow us to be more confident about trading through the end of this lockdown.

The board have reviewed membership and simplified it. We had decided on this before March 20th. Instead of having full membership and a concessionary rate, the concession will apply through family membership and the full rate will be £156 or £13 per month. If you prefer paying your membership in one payment, please carry on but don’t wait for the season to restart!

We will be happy to deal with any members who are suffering severe financial hardship in a discrete and appropriate way.

This is a difficult question to answer. We are in constant contact with the SRU and they are being advised by the Scottish Government. Even when the lockdown is over, it will take a while for people to regain the confidence of being in the proximity of strangers. I am anticipating that the start of next season may be delayed- but I hope I am wrong.

The most important thing just now is that you stay safe. Look after your loved ones and keep up with the Government’s advice. Rugby will return.
